Saliva pH and Volume Levels
The dental company GC, has developed a simple non invasive test that enables Australian Breath Clinic to check a patient's saliva. Saliva is crucial for a healthy mouth, as it not only helps to maintain the good bacteria, but it also can buffer away acids and smells that bad breath bacteria can make.
As we age our saliva quantity and quality dramatically reduces due to lifestyle and medical factors. As this reduction of saliva occurs, such health issues as decay and bad breath will dramatically increase. When a patient attends for a Breath Examination we test the saliva for quantity of saliva, acidity of saliva, and buffering capacity of saliva. This helps us determine if you can adequately fight bad breath or maybe if you need extra support such as special dental gums or Protective Tooth Mousses. In general a healthy person has neutral pH saliva which will turn more alkaline when stimulated with our Recaldent Chewing Gum. By checking the saliva pH both before and after stimulus we are able to determine if in fact your saliva quality may be playing a part in your bad breath mouth imbalance.
Our in depth analysis will enable us to determine if maybe a medical condition such as diabetes or thyroid problems, may be affecting saliva quality and quantity. Also many drugs such as asthma medication, as well as soft drinks, coffee and snacking can change the pH of a patient's saliva to acid levels that encourage the growth of bad breath bacteria.
