Morning Breath is caused by the waste products of mouth bacteria called Volatile Sulphur Compounds. The bacteria that you leave on your tongue surface when you go to sleep break down available proteins in the mouth such as food debris, nasal mucous and gingival fluid and release waste compounds that smell. These VSC's mainly collect on the tongue surface, particularly to the back of the tongue.
-
Your saliva flow slows down or can even stop. This means that there is less buffering of bacteria, less oxygen input, less tongue movement. These are all signals to anaerobic bacteria to begin breeding. During the course of one night's sleep you can manufacture two generations of new bacteria and their waste products, the Volatile Sulphur Compounds.
-
Mucus in the nasal areas thicken. When this happens the mucus can attach quite tenaciously to the nasal walls making removal difficult. This nasal mucus is high in protein and is an excellent food source for "Morning Breath" bacteria.
-
Your tongue falls to the back of your throat. This action allows easy colonisation of the dorsum (back) of the tongue surface. That is why when you wake in the morning, you not only have a bad or sour taste and breath, but you can also exhibit a coating on your tongue. This coating can be yellow or white depending on its severity and the amount of sulphur contained.
-
Before sleep, clean your tongue with a recommended tongue gel. We advise the use of our KForce Breath Guard Oral Gel or KForce Balance Paste, as both of these products are non foaming cleansing products. To clean your tongue properly, you need to first use your brush to rub the cleanser into the tongue surface to disrupt the bacterial colony. Then you can clean the bacteria coating off with a tongue cleaner. The full instructions on how to clean your tongue correctly are available with our kit.
-
Anyone with a dry mouth, nasal problem, or uses a CPAP machine, should also use the Sinoclear Hypertonic Nasal Spray before sleep. The spray helps to keep the nasal passages open and clean of mucus. Remember it is mucous in the back of the throat that can break down to smells and also leak onto the back of the tongue to cause a buildup of coating and bad taste.

Chronic sufferers of bad breath or halitosis, should use the KForce Treatment Program which includes the tongue cleaning products as well as the knockdown pre rinse and KForce K12 probiotics. The use of KForce K12 will help to lessen the numbers of anaerobic bacteria, as can be seen in this agar plate picture

The top 2 circles are KForce K12 probiotic bacteria that produce BLIS (Bacteriocin Like Inhibitory Substance). They inhibit "morning breath" bacterial growth, as shown by the large amount of red space around the probiotic bacteria.
However, the lower 5 circles show normal mouth bacteria with no BLIS activity. They do not inhibit "morning breath" bacteria, as shown by very little red space around the bacteria. Therefore greater bacterial growth occurs during the night which causes the "Morning Breath". |
